Enrol in Medicare

Medicare is Australia's public health system. It covers doctor visits, hospital treatment, and some medical costs. Not all visa types are eligible.

Why this matters

Without Medicare, you pay full price for doctor visits and medical treatment. That can be hundreds of dollars per visit.

How to do it

How to do it

  1. 1

Check if your visa is eligible for Medicare

  2. 2

Go to a Medicare service centre with your passport and visa

  3. 3

    Fill out the enrolment form

  4. 4

Your Medicare card arrives by mail in 3-4 weeks

Some visas (like student visas) don't get Medicare. You'll need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) instead.
