Understand rental bonds in NSW

When you rent in NSW, you'll pay a bond (usually 4 weeks rent). This is held by NSW Fair Trading, not your landlord.

Why this matters

Your bond is your money. Understanding the process ensures you get it back when you move out.

How to do it

How to do it

  1. 1

Pay your bond to the landlord/agent, who must lodge it with NSW Fair Trading

  2. 2

You'll receive a Bond Number from Fair Trading - keep this safe

  3. 3

Complete a condition report when you move in

  4. 4

When moving out, apply to Fair Trading for your bond refund

Never pay bond in cash without a receipt. Scammers ask for cash bonds and disappear.
