Know your 5-year travel facility as a PR

When you get permanent residency, you have 5 years of travel rights. After that, you need a Resident Return Visa to re-enter Australia.

Why this matters

If you leave Australia after your travel facility expires, you may not be able to return as a PR.

How to do it

How to do it

  1. 1

Check your visa grant letter for your travel facility expiry date

  2. 2

The 5 years starts from your PR grant date

  3. 3

Apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) before travelling if expired

  4. 4

To get an RRV, you usually need to have lived in Australia for 2 of the last 5 years

Your PR status doesn't expire, but your right to re-enter Australia does. Apply for RRV before overseas trips.
