Transfer your overseas licence to NSW

If you become a NSW resident, you can drive on your overseas licence for 3 months. Then you must transfer to a NSW licence.

Why this matters

After 3 months, driving on your overseas licence is illegal. You could face fines and your insurance won't cover you.

How to do it

How to do it

  1. 1

Check if your country is on the 'recognised' list (may not need tests)

  2. 2

Get your licence translated if it's not in English (use Multicultural NSW or Home Affairs)

  3. 3

Visit a Service NSW centre with proof of identity, licence, and translation

  4. 4

Pass knowledge and driving tests if required

The 3-month limit starts from when you become a resident, not when you arrive. Don't wait until the last minute.

Time required: 2-3 hours total (including tests)
